This is made for us by the celebrated Hambledon Vineyard. Bright, pure and refreshing, a neatly woven mousse supports notes of stone-fruit, gooseberry crumble and English meadow. Champagne Pol Roger, Réserve, Brut
The style of Pol Roger is always about opulence, sophistication and purity, and their flagship wine, Réserve Brut, is the epitome of their craft. This is a careful balance of the three noble varieties of Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Meunier, grown across 30 of the region’s most desired villages. Although this is a non-vintage Champagne, this Réserve Brut is made mainly from the harmonious 2020 vintage, with 25% reserve wine. The reserve wine is held in steel tank, a blend of older vintages adding weight and complexity to the palate.
Aged for four years, longer than many non-vintage Champagnes, this additional time on lees guarantees the toasted patisserie flavours but also gives the finest, foaming effervescence. White gold in the glass, with a nose of golden pear, tangerine and fresh almond croissant. The palate dances with white peach, clean lemon pith, golden crumb and crescendos with a saffron-infused, chalk stream finish. A Champagne which reminds you what Champagne should be.

2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Swartland White by The Sadie Family Wines, South Africa
We’re delighted to work with the legendary Eben Sadie for our Swartland White, a brand-new wine in our Own Selection. Eben has been planting some wonderful new vineyards over the last 10 years. In the future, he’ll use the grapes from these young vines to produce his own signature wines. For now, though, he is working exclusively with us on our Swartland White and Swartland Red.
The precise blend will change from one vintage to another; our 2022 Swartland White is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc. The nose is lively, with notes of yellow apple, white flowers and honey. The palate is gorgeous with tart white peach, fine minerality and a hint of tangerine. The finish is fresh and wonderfully pure.

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune, Benjamin Leroux
This is deliciously moreish, with sweet strawberry fruit and cranberry bite for lift. The final blend will also include some wine aged in large foudre, which adds a heartier, richer texture and rounds out the wine. Simple but not one-dimensional. Drink 2019-2023.
It is fair to say that Ben is very happy with 2017, describing it as the kind of vintage he would sign up for every year. The whites, he says, are beautiful, and not far from 2014 in style, with purity, finesse, great definition and balance. He describes the reds as pretty, appealing and with body to support ageing, while highlighting the importance of lower-yielding old vines for serious ageing. He eloquently explains that there is no “black sheep Ein 2017, that no village has underperformed. For reason of space, the limited volumes of Grands Crus have not been included in this brochure.{***} {region}Burgundy{region} {color}Red{color} {maturity}ready-keep{maturity} {maturity-text}Ready, but will improve{maturity-text} {vintage}2017{vintage} {***}

Of Benjamin Leroux’s vines, only those around Meursault survived the frost. As it was impossible to save everything, Benjamin had to choose what to protect, opting to sacrifice his vines in the Hautes-Côtes and instead making just 80hl. 2017 Beaune, Vignes Franches, 1er Cru, Dominique Lafon, Burgundy
This parcel of old vines is situated at the top of the vineyard, alongside Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches. The aromas are of red and black fruit, with some spice adding complexity. On the palate, it is all cherry, with real richness, plenty of power and chalky but ripe tannins. The finish is creamy and floral. Drink 2022-2027.
After the famine of 2016, this year is something of a feast, at least in the case of the reds. Sadly, the whites, which Dominique praises as having excellent clarity, are in slightly smaller volumes than 2016. The good news is that the full range of red wines has been made, and in good volume too. Dominique is effusive in his praise for the 2017 reds, describing them as appealing, with beautiful balance, a lightness of touch, refined tannins and a floral character with stunning red fruit.

Champagne Bollinger is famed for its rich house style. This is partly because 80% of each Bollinger harvest is matured in oak barrels adding depth, complexity and texture. 2021 The Sadie Family Wines, Treinspoor, Ouwingerdreeks, Swartland
The 2021 Treinspoor is Sadie's Tinta Barocca that the man himself likens to Nebbiolo, also opining that it is a wine that needs considerable ageing. These vines were planted in 1974, and the blend includes 40% whole clusters. It has a complex, succinctly defined bouquet with melted tar and graphite infused dark berry fruit, a hint of Lapsang Souchong. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly-tuned acidity, almost Burgundian in texture yet with more pepperiness towards the finish. So elegant and harmonious - this is stunning from every angle you look at it. Drink 2023-2045

With the same perfect proportions in mind of the other glassware in our range, we have sought to produce a perfectly-balanced, fine Whisky & Water glass of great clarity. 2010 Echo de Lynch-Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux
Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.
The 2010 Echo de Lynch Bages has a very attractive bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit tinged with damp loam and undergrowth aromas, all well-defined and welcoming floral scents with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. Hints of graphite and bell pepper infuse the ample black fruit. There is superb weight and body towards the finish. A classic Claret from start to finish, this is a great wine in the making. Champagne Bollinger, Special Cuvée, Brut
This is gleaming gold in the glass. The nose entices with yellow fruit, ginger and hot buttered scones, while the palate is softly foaming, powerful and utterly delicious. The fine mousse aids textural complexity. Flavours weave between the immediate satisfaction of baked plum crumble with cream, and serious, savoury Pinot musk from the thoroughbred chalk terroir, the maturity of the base vintages and evolution in bottle. The finish is mineral, golden, expansive and dangerously moreish.

2014 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
Intense in both the glass and the mouth, this is another super 2014 wine. There is underlying power here, velvety, ripe tannins and notes of a savoury nature, perhaps even cedar. Very pure fruit, cassis, plum and dark cherry stick out, along with a juicy dollop of vanilla cream. Heavenly spice comes through on the long finish. The wine is utterly sumptuous and effortlessly persistent. Classically elegant, this is a wine of real pedigree. It is truly drinkable and approachable at an early age and could be one of the real bargains of the vintage.

2020 Volnay, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, Burgundy
This is from the Echards and Aussy village vineyards. The higher level of tartaric acid in this vintage (at the expense of malic acid) gives the wine some rigour on the palate. 2022 The Sadie Family Wines Kokerboom, Ouwingerdreeks, Old Vines Series
In many respects, this 2022 Kokerboom displays the typical waxy, lanolin, and almost wet wool characters often associated with Semillon. The most astounding aspect is that this vineyard had only 180mm of rain this year, and this drought and hydric stress forced us to pick the vineyard much earlier than ever before. Yet very few green flavours are present, and most aromatics are the classic Semillon flavours, with maybe a granadilla passionfruit aromatics being a new dimension. The tannins, acidity, overall texture and volume in the wine are incredible, and we are in awe of the power of this terroir. The compact tannins and acidity take this wine to infinity and beyond… We produced very little, so please share with friends.

2017 Volnay, Les Aussy, 1er Cru, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur
Les Aussy is a generous Premier Cru vineyard, and the 2017 characteristically offers rich and earthy red fruit, more concentration and density than the village wine and a more refined tannic structure. There is plenty of charm and approachability here, but a little more stuffing than its little brother. Drink 2021-2026.
François is keen to highlight the importance of the solidarity shown by the Côte’s vignerons at the end of April, when everyone came together to burn dampened bales and create cloud cover to ward off the frost. Without such action this could well have been another catastrophic yield. Having avoided this threat, the rest of the season was fairly straightforward with careful vineyard management and harvest began on the 30th August. He feels the whites are a mix of 2015 and 2014, while the reds are pretty and will drink well from an early age.{***} {region}Volnay{region} {color}Red{color} {maturity}ready-improve{maturity} {maturity-text}Ready, but will improve{maturity-text} {vintage}2017{vintage}

The world has moved away form the saucer-shaped glass to the flute, which is now widely accepted. Although very elegant in shape, the flute does not allow for the fullest aromatic expression of a Champagne, as the top of the glass is narrow. We have created a glass with a wider, fuller bowl to enable the bouquet to express itself fully, particularly important when drinking Champagnes with age or with powerful aromas. The glass has a deep v-shape at the base of the bowl, the bottom of which has been laser-etched to ensure that a brilliant stream of fine bubbles rises effortlessly up the glass.

2020 Montagny, Bonneveaux, 1er Cru, Domaine Berthenet, Burgundy
This is Berthenet’s most full-bodied style, with ample fresh stone fruit, a hint of golden apple and a touch of hazelnut. The vineyard sits right at the top of the Côte Chalonnaise, giving the wine a vibrantly charged acidity and a round, plush texture. As with his other cuvées, the élevage is carefully curated. Here, the wine is aged entirely in (30% new) demi-muids before being moved to stainless steel tanks – ensuring the wine remains vivacious and reflects its terroir. The finish is resplendent with a rich spiciness and a piquancy of flint.

The 2022 Skerpioen enters the aromatics with volumes of fruit and limey, citrus and chamomile flowers. This wine’s distinctive saline qualities, salty taste, and minerality are again prominent. The salinity of this wine is a textbook aspect of the site and terroir of this vineyard. The tannins are firm, and the acidity is fresh, and we suggest rushing off to buy oysters! 2009 Warre's, Port
Warre's, the oldest British port house, is commemorating the bicentenary of the liberation Oporto by the Anglo-Portuguese army with 500 cases of their 2009 vintage port. Each bottle is numbered and a donation of veteran charities will be made for every case sold. It's a crime to drink this elegant and splendid wine now, because it can live for 20 years with ease. But it tastes incredible already, so I won't tell anyone if you are tempted to crack it open before then.
A selection of the best wines and hampers, Money Week, 9 December 2011 Of the famous Symington triptych ( the others being Dow and Graham) only Warre has declared in 2009, and only in strictly limited volumes, reflecting both the inherent low yielding nature of the fruit and the extensive selection that has informed all stages of its gestation.
Made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Duke of Wellington’s liberation of Oporto, a dramatic adventure in which a certain William Warre played a prominent part, there will be a generous donation from every bottle sold made to the Help The Heroes Charity.
Sourced principally from the cooler and higher vineyards at Cavadinha, Retiro and Telhada, this is a wonderfully elegant, aromatic Warre, possibly less dense of structure than some, but making up for that by the beauty and integrity of its architectural design. A velvety palate and a rich peppery finish underline this wine’s pedigree.2009 Warre's, PortPort2009 Warre's, PortBottle Price 75cl $405 -
The Wine Merchant's Glasses, The 'Red Bordeaux' Glass - (set of 2)
The key here is to have a bowl of depth and breadth, with the rim slightly tapered at the top to concentrate the bouquet. Some fashionable examples are so big that they can hold almost a whole bottle of wine, and sometimes this means that the aromas of a more delicate wine can seem lost. Red Bordeaux can be high in tannins and acidity, so the glass has been shaped to enhance the expression of fruit on the mid-palate. This glass would also work well for Northern Rhône reds, which share some of the characteristics of Red Bordeaux.

The Wine Merchant's Glasses, The 'Red Burgundy' Glass - (set of 2)
The appeal of Red Burgundy, for most consumers, lies in its heady bouquet and silky texture. The wide bowl of this glass permits full aromatic expression, and the manner in which the wine is directed onto the palate enables the natural textural softness of the Pinot Noir grape to be fully enjoyed. Use it for Pinot Noir from other parts of the world too, and I feel it would also be ideal for the powerfully aromatic wines of Piedmont such as Barolo and Barbaresco.

2020 Mâcon-Bray, Les Essarts, Pierre Boisson, Burgundy
Domaine Boisson-Vadot, run by the father, son, and daughter teams of Bernard, Pierre, and Anne Boisson, is one of the rising stars in Mersault. The philosophy of the Domaine revolves around careful, hands-on vineyard management to coax the tremendous potential of each vintage out of the various plots and low-impact winemaking in the cellars that allow the unique terroir of each vineyard to surface. New oak is minimal, no more than 30% for the top cuvées, and much more restraint in the village wines and Bourgogne Blanc.

2021 St Joseph, Clos de Cuminaille, Domaine Pierre Gaillard, Rhône
This cuvée comes from the high granite slopes of the 3-hectare ancient Roman Cuminaille lieu-dit. It was Pierre’s first vineyard, planted in 1981. The nose is wonderfully fragrant with swathes of red fruits, black pepper and violets. The palate introduces blackcurrants and blueberries along with fine, firm tannins and a hint of savoury complexity on the finish. Drink 2024-2030.

2022 The Sadie Family Wines Soldaat, Ouwingerdreeks, Old Vines Series
This 2022 Soldaat has the characteristic red cherry and bright pomegranate fruit aromas that carry through into deeper earthy flavours. This year the colour is slightly darker but still bright red, and the tannins are softer than usual. The fruit is overall quite expressive, and the softer mouthfeel of the tannins suggests that this vintage was quite fully ripe at 13% alcohol. It will be hard not to drink it, but the wine gains massive complexity with time in the bottle.
-
2022 The Sadie Family Wines Pofadder, Ouwingerdreeks, Old Vines Series
The 2022 Pofadder displays delicate red fruit of great purity and linear qualities; there are soft oriental spices and earthy aromas on the outer edges suggesting greater complexity in the future. The same fruit and deeper earthy aspects carry through to the mouthfeel and taste, which is a more serious style of Cinsaut. As with many 2022 wines, the tannins are also remarkably smooth with softer acidity.
-
2020 St Aubin, Compendium, Joseph Colin, Burgundy
It comes from 9 plots in seven lieux-dits so Joseph may choose Les 7 Terroirs. Pale lemon colour, a light reduction to the nose. Lime notes on the palate, very much a classically crisp St-Aubin, with modest flesh but fine persistence. - Jasper Morris
-
2018 Saumur Rouge Les Chapaudaises, Domaine Guiberteau
Bright ruby red color, the nose expresses complex hints of berries such as black currant, blackberry, slightly smoky and mineral notes. In the mouth it is fresh with delicate tannins, good balance and long sip that ends in a mineral finish..
-
2017 Brunello di Montalcino, Scopetone, Tuscany
Scarnacuoia’s old vines give this a captivating perfume, mineral detail and depth. Three years in botti and 12 months in cement allow the wine to relax and smooth out. This is vivid, open and composed; glossy cherry, peach and pomegranate fill out a firm frame. The finish is extended by dried floral spice and a minty mineral tang.

Champagne Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Yellow Label BrutPhilippe Clicquot-Muiron established Veuve Clicquot in 1772. It was, however, Phillipe`s daughter-in-law, Nicole-Barbe Clicquot, who really laid the foundations of the modern company. She was one of the great innovators Eit was she who invented remuage, or riddling, in the early 19th century. Now it is part of the LVMH group.
With its famous yellow label, this non-vintage Champagne is recognised as Veuve's flagship wine. It is a blend of around 50 Cru village and reserve wines from different vintages. Exhibiting fruit, finesse and style, this is a rich, classic Champagne with a yeasty bouquet that truly deserves its status as a Grande Marque.{***} {region}Champagne{region} {color}White{color} {maturity}drink-now{maturity} {maturity-text}Ready, but will keep{maturity-text} {ratings}

The Wine Merchant's Glasses, The 'Port & Sauternes' Glass - (set of 2)
For decades Berry Bros. & Rudd has used a small, perfectly-formed glass, largely for white wine in terms of in-house entertaining, but which is ideally suited to any aromatic wines served in small measures. Port and Sauternes fit the bill, as would any sweet wine, frankly. In our new range we have sought to design something in a similar vein, but slightly larger to allow proper swirling of the glass. By contrast, far too many Ports, in particular, and fortified wines in general have traditionally been served in tiny glasses which are hopeless with regard to experiencing a wine’s bouquet.

2019 Volnay, Pitures, 1er Cru, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, Burgundy
Pitures is François’s only Volnay from the north of the village. It’s a higher vineyard close to Pommard and stylistically very different; François refers to it as a distant cousin. Certainly, there’s a Pommardian dash about the wine, with a sturdiness and more pronounced tannins. In 2019, it works really well, with the deeper creases seemingly ironed out.

2016 Côte-Rôtie, La Giroflarie, Patrick Jasmin, Rhône
Glistening violet. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry scents are complemented by tobacco, violet and cracked pepper suggestions. Silky in texture and lively on the palate, offering gently sweet dark berry, cherry compote and floral pastille flavours firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. The spicy note returns an impressively long, penetrating finish with good clarity and subtle, fine-grained tannins.

2017 Brunello di Montalcino, Tassi, Tuscany, Italy
The vintage’s heat gave intensity to the grapes, but the vines’ proximity to the river and cold mountain winds retained freshness and phenolic maturity. Wild fermentation in concrete, 10% whole-bunch and 25 months in botti grande make for a stylish Brunello. Dense, dark fruit, earthy detail and floral highlights melt into a firm frame with juicy velvet tannins.

2020 Arcurìa, Etna Rosso, Graci, Sicily, Italy
This amphitheatric vineyard sits between 600-700m also on a variety of volcanic soils. These low yielding vines yield tiny quantities of Nerello grapes, Alberto manages to vinify the essence of this extreme terroir, and character of the capricious grape. 40 days of maceration following fermentation infuse this incredible wine with the sweet but china-fine like tannins. Although light on its feet, there is real substance to this wine, chewy cherry, loose leaf tea, tobacco chinotto are kept in suspense by a spine of mineral tension, and propelled by a sunny Sicilian soul.

The Wine Merchant's Glasses, The 'White Bordeaux' Glass - (set of 2)
This is a glass designed for fresh, aromatic young wines. The shape is designed to concentrate aromas but also to highlight crispness and elegance. Sauvignon Blanc from both Bordeaux and the Loire falls naturally into this category, but Riesling and Chenin Blanc would also work well in this style of glass. Albariño, Gewurztraminer and Muscat fall into this grouping too.

2015 Château Branaire-Ducru, St Julien, Bordeaux
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc.
Patrick Maroteau's excellent 2015 from this Fourth Growth estate shows real purity, with great precision and ripe tannins that grip and offer an intense focus—the rich, fresh, spicy nose of damsons and blackberry fruit oozes class. There is precision here, a polish—quite simply harmonious. The wine tastes glorious, just as great wine should taste: crunchy, pure and fresh fruit, high acidity, silky ripe tannins and nice balance. This is a triumphant wine, with a typical and classic blend for this great estate and phenomenal length. It's really elegant and one of our favourites—a must-buy this year.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé, En Chatenay, Cuvée Zen, Domaine de la Soufrandière,Bret Bros., Burgundy
From a .7 ha parcel in Prissé.
A subtle but easily perceptible dollop of wood is present on the almost painfully intense and overtly powerful larger-scale flavours, which also exude a bracing salinity on the youthfully austere, serious, and lingering finish that already offers fine depth. This possesses fine development potential, though at least some patience is again advised.

2007 Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux
Ripe fruit and hints of tobacco hit the nose before you discover the palate has well-balanced acidity and silky tannins. There is a good concentration of blackberries and earthiness with a slight hint of liquorice. As with the estate's white, the finish goes on and on. This is one for the traditional Bordeaux lover.
Ben Upjohn, Berry Bros. & Rudd
No wonder Olivier Bernard was beaming. His 2007 is the latest in a line of stunning vintages, which, apart from the fantastic 2005, is his best wine since 2000. A brooding, spicy, damson nose leads onto a dense palate with blackberry, crushed cassis, tobacco and leather with a long, pure finish.
The balanced, mouth-filling fruit is cloaked in velvety but significant tannins (higher than 2005), bestowing the wine with a refined, masculine, early-drinking style. Fantastic in the context of any vintage and not far off the quality of Haut-Brion, this is an essential buy for any Claret-lover.

Magenta/purple-coloured, the ripe and spicy 2020 Barbera D'Alba Scudetto is fruity with fresh blackberries peppery spice, violets, and dusty earth. Medium-bodied and silky, it’s pure and long on the palate, with great intensity and a mouthwatering, warming finish. It is damn tasty now and will drink well over the next 8-10 years.

2020 Alexandre Bain, Mademoiselle M, Vin de France
Named after his daughter, who was born just as the harvest began for this wine, Mademoiselle’ M’ is made from vines grown in richer and more structured Kimmeridgian-limestone soils. The nose is fat and buttery, with a burst of bruised apple, candied lemon peel, lychee and a hint of honey.
Aged over a total of 36 months (with 18 in wooden barrels), this has a sumptuous texture that balances the overwhelming minerality from the terroir. Probably my favourite from the lineup, the balance of exotic fruit and a rich umami flavour is unlike anything I’ve had before. The finish lengthens after every sip, culminating in a crisp orchard fruit finale.

2021 Bourgogne Rouge, Benjamin Leroux
The element of this Bourgogne Rouge that comes from Benjamin Leroux’s own fruit was down 40% in the 2021 vintage, while the market price for grapes at this level was up 120% - so he had to buy carefully. Benjamin opted to use whole-bunch fermentation on the regular components of the blend, and is pleased with how the new purchases have fitted in. The wine is very pleasing and easy, with lots of soft and sweet red fruit flavours.

2018 Brunello di Montalcino, Scopetone, Tuscany, Italy
This comes from Brunello’s original Scarnacuoia vineyards, which are some of the coolest in the region. Yields were lower in 2018, the colour lighter and alcohol lower, yet there is still focus in this wine The old vines give this Brunello an enchanting nose: cinotto, blue fruits, mineral details and smoky depth.
Three years in large 33hl oak botti, followed by 12 months in cement, allow the wine to relax and smooth. The results are bright, open and composed: peaches and glossy red berries with the bite of pomegranate. The tannins are softer and cleansing than many vintages, while the finish is extended by floral high notes and a minty mineral tang.

2019 Alexandre Bain, L. d'Ange, Vin de France
This wine has a distinct ripeness and richness—quite a marmalade, quince and orange peel characteristic on the nose. The palate is quite opulent and rich, with more sour stone fruit, preserved lemon and a slight herbal note towards the end. There is a great deal happening on the palate. There is a noted salinity here with a tartness, almost tannic nature to it.

2014 Etna Rosso, Arcurìa, Graci, Sicily, Italy
Grown at 600 metres above sea-level on rocky lava soils, there is a delicacy to the form of this wine that belies its concentration. Perfumed cherry fruit and citrus peel layer with coal and refreshing acidity. It’s very persistent.
Mount Etna is the perfect example of how nature can truly affect a wine and render it breath-taking. Alberto Graci has created his Etna Rosso using traditional methods that ensure high quality, but enviable yields. The indigenous varieties sing through, with Nerello Mascalese offering bright, vivacious red fruits, with an almost endless depth, tempered by a measure of Nerello Cappuccio that offers roundness, and a slight, endearing candied note, finishing with a creamy kiss of oak. This is a must for Burgundy lovers looking for something fun and vibrant, or, indeed, Italian wine lovers looking for the perfect wine to serve alongside a good roast or barbecue.

This is from the lieux-dits Grands Clos and Clos Chareau. The former is higher up, on limestone, the latter lower down, with more clay. Great Morgeot is a vin de garde; this is no exception. It’s spicy and rich, with plump fruit and delicate floral touches. The texture is serious and a little firm, but this will age beautifully.

2018 Santenay, Cuvée "S", David Moreau, Burgundy
This is from two very different vineyards: David has 0.8 hectares of 35-year-old vines in Les Cornières on glacial alluvial spoil from the combe, and 0.15 hectares in Charmes-Dessus on complex limestone, all planted in the 1980s. This multi-vintage cuvée is sourced from Champagne Penet-Chardonnet’s finest sites, located across Verzy and Verzenay. Comprised of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, the base wine is from the superlative 2013 vintage. 2018 Brunello di Montalcino, Tassi, Tuscany, Italy
This comes from a single vineyard, tucked between the River Orcia and the hilltop Castelnuovo dell’Abate at 240 metres altitude. Here, the strata of soils are mix of iron-rich clay and galestro, filled with calcareous marine fossils. The 2018 vintage gave beautiful balance, without the blocky richness of 2017. It’s undergone wild fermentation in concrete, and 30 days on skins followed by 30 months in ultra traditional Slovenian botti grandi. The colour is pale, and the nose is perfumed with cool rose. The palate shines with savoury fruit, relaxed, composed and confident with a light mineral brightness and fine earthiness. The finish is smoky and super stylish.

2020 Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly, 1er Cru, Château du Clos, Burgundy
Outstanding. A slightly riper if otherwise similar nose precedes finer if not denser flavors that coat the palate in sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive mouthfeel to the bone-dry, youthfully austere and compact finale that is noticeably more tightly wound. Champagne Waris Hubert, Ercanbald, L'Oncle de Merrey, Rosé, Brut
As a relative newcomer in this historic region, Waris Hubert has not been bound by the constraints of market expectations or legacy. Instead, the domaine has been able to instigate change and leapfrog the quality of many famous names, in a relatively short period of time. Olivier combines slow cold fermentations, low sulphur use and extended lees ageing to create an artisan range of Champagnes that are richly textured and expressive, combining the very best of modernity and tradition.
-
2017 Champagne Waris Hubert, Blanche, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru, Avize, Extra Brut (Gift Box)
This Grand Cru cuvée, named for Olivier’s daughter, is a stunning expression of Avize Chardonnay from a challenging year. The vines average 40 years of age, entirely organically grown on chalky and clay soils. The nose has a complex and inviting bouquet of golden apples and pears, with a delightful interplay of white peach and acacia blossoms.
The palate is textured and expressive, with a more restrained edge than the opulent 2016 – shy at first, but the 2017 really develops in the glass, proof of the quality of the terroir. The finish retains a lovely mineral edge and a hint of cinnamon and sweet spices.

The Wine Merchant's Glasses, The 'White Burgundy' Glass - (set of 2)
Burgundy, red and white, is perhaps one of the most sensual of wines, and we have sought to design a glass which reflects this characteristic. A wide bowl maximises aromatic expression and the rim is marginally fluted outwards, directing the flow of wine to the palate where its natural richness is emphasised. Whilst being ideal for Chardonnay from all parts of the world, I feel sure that this glass will also be excellent for broad-flavoured, richly-textured white wines such as Rhône, (especially Viognier), Rioja and Pinot Gris.
