Latour is a benchmark for its unwavering consistency and exceptional quality in even the most challenging vintages. The 1996 vintage, in particular, showcases the heavenly results achieved by this renowned winery. This textbook Latour wine is characterised by its immense concentration, richness, polished tannins, and full-bodied yet not overwhelming nature. The wine's phenomenal power and balance make it an extraordinary specimen. We anticipate its continued evolution up to 2030.

2007 Barolo, Bartolo Mascarello, PiedmontThe 2007 Barolo has grown tremendously over the last few months. Some bottles have been more closed than others, but what is certain is that the wine is putting on weight. The 2007 appears to have a long drinking window ahead. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage.2007 Barolo, Bartolo Mascarello, PiedmontItaly2007 Barolo, Bartolo Mascarello, PiedmontBottle Price 150cl $7,553Was $7,950

2016 Chevalier-Montrachet, Grand Cru, Château de Puligny-Montrachet (Magnum)
The estate has nearly a quarter of a hectare here, but suffered a 50 percent loss in 2016. Marvellously intense, this has an ethereal, cool, stone component Ea classic character of this vineyard, with a lick of exotic nectarine on the finish. It was matured equally in a mixture of standard and demis, and with more and longer lees contact than usual, to feed the wine’s textural volume. It will need patience. Drink 2022-2032.

2006 Toscana Sangiovese, Soldera Case Basse, Italy
A legendary wine from Montalcino's greatest producer, the 2006 Sangiovese (labelled as IGT as they had left the Brunello consorzio) is enticingly perfumed. The silky texture and dark sweet fruit hide the framework of strong (but fine) tannins and fresh acidity lifts the wine.

1961 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, St Julien, Bordeaux
The 1961 Ducru Beaucaillou is a vintage that I have tasted on a dozen occasions over the years and, although nowadays it can vary bottle to bottle, it remains a formidably Saint-Julien. It shows just a thin circle of bricking commensurate with its age, quite deep at its core. The bouquet is vigorous and enticing with black fruit, autumn leaves, black truffle and, evidenced on this particular bottle, a light ferrous/rusty piping scent. The palate is structured and dense. This has always been a swarthy and muscular Ducru-Beaucaillou, extremely focused and, whilst not displaying the finesse of its peers, there is something aristocratic and deeply impressive. It will clearly give another two decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at La Trompette.

Champagne Ulysse Collin, Le Jardin d'Ulysse, Extra Brut (Base 2015)
This exceptional champagne is a darling of lovers of grower champagnes—and one can see why. It is exuberant, fresh, and crisp, yet it has excellent depth of flavour as well, with aromas of lemon peel, nectarine, passionfruit, and a hint of smoky, flinty, saline minerality. It is produced from a 1.55-hectare parcel in the village of Congy in the Coteaux du Petit Morin, planted to a mix of Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay. The grapes are mostly 2015, fermented in used casks, and blended with a small amount of reserve wine before ageing for five years on the lees.
It was disgorged in March of 2021 with an extra-brut dosage.

2006 Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche, Grand Cru, Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy
This wine shines with nobility, as it befits its provenance from the most extensive vineyard site (just about 2 hectares) in the illustrious Grand Cru of Le Montrachet. The palate displays a considerable block of fruit for the moment, with the detail as yet hidden. The quality shows in the finish, which stretches out to leave an incredible aftertaste of heady fruit and mineral purity. It is absolutely superb.

1999 Echézeaux, Grand Cru, Emmanuel Rouget, Burgundy
From Les Treux, Clos St Denis and Les Cruots. This wine split the audience - that is to say everybody was reasonably comfortable with the quality, if not the quality price ratio, yet it was not really singing. It did show the requisite density, though the barrel had not fully integrated with the fruit. For all that the fruit was not in dancing mode, the persistence was undeniably there.

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru, Lamy Caillat, BurgundyA decidedly cool and very reserved nose reluctantly reveals its elegant and spicy array of freshly sliced apple, pear and a hint of lavender. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess very good volume along with excellent minerality and drive on the focused, intense and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Champ Gains, this needs to develop more depth but once again, the underlying material appears to be up to the challenge.

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Champs Gains, 1er Cru, Lamy Caillat, BurgundyThe 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains wafts from the glass with aromas of orange oil, Meyer lemon, green apple, fresh pastry and clear honey. Medium to full-bodied, broad and textural, it’s layered and concentrated, with lively acids and an intensely saline finish. This has turned out very well.
As I wrote last year, readers as yet unfamiliar with Domaine Lamy-Caillat, a tiny estate that ranks as one of the Côte de Beaune’s most exciting new addresses, should refer to my profile in the Wine Advocate’s Interim End of March 2018 report. Artisanal winemaking and, above all, long, patient élevage is what defines this domaine, with the wines spending two winters on the lees before bottling by hand after natural clarification. The wines evolve at their own pace, and the meticulous Sébastien Caillat devotes immense attention to every detail.
I hope other Côte de Beaune winemakers will be tempted to emulate his methods, as the results speak for themselves. His 2017s have turned out brilliantly, confirming their status as the domaine’s best vintage to date, and the 2018s are also very promising. Excitingly, several new appellations have already joined the portfolio, and they are reported on in the accompanying notes.

Pale lemon and lime, with rather an elegant, classy nose, white fruit behind, excellent texture and good acid balance. The village Chassagne offers a firm finish but with a flourish. Gracious fruit, which is not exaggerated.
Lovely, but keep for another two to three years.

1990 Barolo, Falletto, Riserva, Bruno Giacosa, PiedmontI remember paying what at the time seemed like a small fortune for bottles of Giacosas 1990 Barolo Riserva Falletto at Pecks Enoteca in Milan. What I would give today to be able to buy more at the same tariff! The 1990 Barolo Riserva Falletto is one of Bruno Giacosas most towering wines. Period. Rich, layered and opulent, this mineral-driven, powerful Barolo covers every inch of the palate with masses of dark fruit, smoke, soy, plums, menthol, dried roses, pine and a host of other balsamic overtones. This vivid, kaleidoscopic Barolo is a reference-point wine readers wont want to miss. As always, the Riserva Falletto is virile and authoritative in tone. Simply put, it its profound. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.
