2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary Claret by Dourthe, Bordeaux
Our biggest seller for decades, “GOC is a carefully assembled blend from some of Bordeaux’s best terroirs. Merlot makes up 67% of the blend, giving the wine its silky richness. The balance is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, adding power and structure. After a year in oak, this shows why Claret is such a perennial favourite: warm, savoury aromas of cedar and woodsmoke, with supple cassis and blackberry on the palate. Designed for early drinking, this is a comfortable partner for most food, and is soft enough to be enjoyed on its own.

2019 Pouilly-Fuissé, Sur La Roche, Olivier Merlin
When the classification arrives in 2020, this will be the highest-altitude Premier Cru in Pouilly-Fuissé: it’s over 300 metres above sea level. There’s a little more ripeness to the nose here, but the palate retains the signature freshness of the vineyard. A star performer this year, this has wonderful salinity and minerality. 2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir by Benjamin Leroux
If you order only one red Burgundy this autumn, make it this one. Every facet of stunning Côte d'Or Pinot Noir is present in this creation and the price is as competitive as I have seen this year for any epic-quality wine made from this fabulous grape. Ben Leroux's skills are well-known and here he draws on fruit harvested from od vines in Chorey-lès-Beaune to craft this expressive, silky-red-cherry perfumed wine. It is young, but there is already much to adore, from the pristine clarity of aroma and flavour to the delightfully refreshing finish
Matthew Jukes, Wine of the Week, Money Week (October 2023)
Made in collaboration with Benjamin Leroux, our Bourgogne Côte d’Or comes from old vines planted in the appellation of Chorey-lès-Beaune. The 2022 vintage seamlessly marries explosive red-berry fruit with refreshing acidity and sweet tannins. Spicy floral top notes and a hint of vanilla oak provide further complexity. This would be an excellent match with roasted poultry, grilled meats and soft cheeses.

2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary Claret, Limited-Edition Label
Good Ordinary Claret is our flagship red Bordeaux. Produced in partnership with Dourthe, it is a blend of fruit from some of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs. Since its inception in the 1970s, it has become the top seller in our range Eand a firm favourite of ours. When asked to explain the name “Good Ordinary Claret E our former Chairman Christopher Berry Green once said: “It was Claret, it was good, and it was ordinary. EOver the years, it has become known affectionately as “GOC E
This limited-edition label for our Good Ordinary Claret was designed for us by London-based artist Rob Ryan. His paper-cut design draws inspiration from the shopfront at No.3 St James’s Street, our home since 1698.
Our Good Ordinary Claret is an early-drinking style of red Bordeaux Eone that is versatile and reliably delicious. The 2020 vintage is predominantly Merlot, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of Cabernet Franc. On the nose, ripe hedgerow fruits mingle alongside warming aromas of cedar and allspice.
The palate is plump and moreish, laden with black cherries, blackberries and myrtle berries. Meanwhile, a backbone of smooth, velvety tannins brings structure and complexity. This is a great wine to please a crowd, perfect with a Sunday roast or a winter vegetable stew.

2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Pauillac by Ch. Lynch Bages
For the 2020 vintage, we continue our long relationship with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages. The nose is bright and fragrant, with notes of cassis, brambles and wild cherries. The palate brings more wild-berry complexity and a warming note of cedar spice from the oak barriques used during maturation.
True to its Pauillac origins, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend. Merlot was particularly strong in 2020; the higher proportion than usual (36%) brings a subtle roundness to the palate. This is an approachable yet wonderfully elegant expression of Pauillac.

2021 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary White by Dourthe, Bordeaux
This was an outstanding vintage for white Bordeaux and our “GOW”, skilfully made by Dourthe. The nose is bright and aromatic, with notes of lime, flower, elderflower and green tea leaf. The palate brings exotic fruits, typical of its 100% Sauvignon Blanc makeup. Swathes of citrus and white peach lead to a zesty burst of acidity. No oak is used, allowing the crisp, mineral profile to speak for itself. This is perfect as an apéritif or with lighter fish or chicken dishes.

2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Swartland Red by The Sadie Family Wines, South Africa
Splurge on the magnificent 2022 Berry Bros Swartland Red by the Sadie family. It’s a wonderfully seductive Syrah with layer after layer of fat, fleshy, spicy incense and bramble fruit.
Jane MacQuitty, The Times (February 2024)
We’re thrilled to work with the legendary Eben Sadie for our Swartland Red, a new addition to our Own Selection. Eben has planted some incredible new vineyards over the last decade. In the future, he’ll use the fruit of these young vines for his own signature wines. But for now, he is working exclusively with us on our Swartland Red and Swartland White.
The precise blend will change from one year to the next; our 2022 Swartland Red is made from 100% Syrah fruit. With pure, freshly picked raspberries on the nose, the palate has deep, fleshy, bramble fruits and gravelly minerality. A delicate umami note lingers on the invigorating finish.

2019 Moulin-à-Vent, En Mortperay, Domaine A.-F. Gros, Beaujolais
The domaine purchased 3.80ha of the lieu-dit En Mortperay in 2017, half a hectare very new, the rest with 60-year-old vines. The grapes are brought to Beaune, vinified as whole bunches, one tank of three under carbonic maceration for ten days, the other two more classic.
Ageing is partly in foudre, completed by 228-litre barrels. This is really interesting as it starts like a floral pinot and finishes more on gamay. Really quite lovely and with some crunchiness too.

Hambledon, Classic Cuvée Rosé, Sparkling, Hampshire, England
Hambledon Vineyard has a long and fascinating history. Not only does the village have the reputation as the cradle of cricket, long before Lord’s, it seems, but it is also the location of the first English commercial vineyard, courtesy of the Francophile Sir Guy Salisbury Jones, who developed the vineyards in the early 1950s.
After an uneventful hiatus, the vineyard was purchased by Ian Kellett in 1999, and his investments of both patience and capital are now yielding fruit, quite literally, in the form of some of the best-located Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes in the country.
A beautiful vivid pink with a bright red berry hue, it displays an array of wild strawberry aromas on the nose that lead to a generous, complex palate of buttered toast, ripe lemon and juicy hedgerow fruit.

2019 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Le Vigne, Faraone, Abruzzo, Italy
Abruzzo’s most famous red wine, Federico’s, is crafted from two different sites: a fresher, hilltop vineyard that gives perfume and elegance and traditional pergola vines that give broader fruit structure.
After fermentation in an inox tank, the wine is aged for two years in large oak botti. The results are a multi-layered expression of Montepulciano, aromatically complex: baked earth, heady spices, and dark berry fruits. Deep in colour, the palate has real depth. Wild spices, loaded with baked and bright black fruits, are framed by soft, chewy, coco-coated, damson-like tannins. Perfect with strong cheese or spicy tomato-based pasta dishes.

Pierre Précieuses is Alexandre’s flagship cuvée. It is aged 38 months before release, 18 months in barrel and 20 months in stainless steel and undergoes no battonnage during this whole time. The nose is delicate with white flowers, lovely lemon and grapefruit notes, and juicy, fresh quince.
The finesse and freshness are striking on the palate, whilst having a great consistency and body. Plenty of citrus peel and grapefruit bitterness is balanced with honey, buttery notes, and some sweet spices, and it is truly complex. This wine comes from a west-facing vineyard with chalky soil. Just three barrels - under 900 bottles - were made this year. The nose has some stone fruit and a hint of reduction. On the nose and palate, this wine was vibrant. Great fruit flavours with darker fruit as well as blackberry leaf. This slightly hedgerow nature is incredibly autumnal in nature. Slight forest floor notes show a layer of complexity that should not be available in a wine of this price. The length is incredibly respectable, and the balance and friendliness of this wine make it particularly engaging.

2020 Moulin-à-Vent, Les Brussellions, Louis Boillot, Beaujolais
The 2020 Moulin-à-Vent Les Brussellions has a much more backward, earthier nose than its peers. Maybe this is going through a sultry phase. The palate is a little stalky on the entry but fresh and has a strong salinity on the finish that I like. Give it 2-3 years in bottle.

2022 Casamatta Rosso, Bibi Graetz, Tuscany, Italy
Bibi Graetz considers his new-and-improved 2022 a true renaissance of Casamatta – becoming “a little Testamatta”. From around 420 metres above sea level, the Sangiovese used here comes from Bibi’s Vincigliata and Olmo vineyards in Fiesole. This is bright and energetic, vinified entirely in stainless steel to protect that character. Leaping with perfume, the wine flows with red berries and sweet dried violets. This is followed by glistening red cherries, fresh cranberries and supreme balance on the palate. This is one for the true Bibi fans.

2021 Langhe Nebbiolo, Fogliati, Piedmont, Italy
Annalisa’s Langhe Nebbiolo comes from a 30-year-old, east-facing vineyard, which faces up towards Castiglione Falletto. Soils here are like those of the estate’s viewpoint, with layers of sand and mineral clay, which give perfume and elegance. The wine was fermented in steel tank, and spent six months in 25 hectolitre botti. This is crunchy and pure, with juicy berry flavours, firm floral edges and a bite of blood orange.

2023 Moscato d'Asti, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy
Only 5% alcohol, this very gently sparkling wine is fully sweet, with 131g/L residual sugar. It's a delightfully fresh style though, not in the least bit unctuous. Bright and aromatic on the nose with peach and lemon sherbet, and white flowers. Perfect for summer, it's a great match for fruit salads, pastries and birthday cake.

2021 Il Bruciato, Bolgheri, Guado al Tasso, Antinori, Tuscany, Italy
This is a dark and concentrated edition of Il Bruciato. Bursting with blackberry, black plum and vibrant cherry touches. Some sweet spice and vanilla too. A portion of the Merlot and Syrah were fermented at slightly lower temperatures in order to protect varietal expressiveness and lighter, pretty aromas.
This keeps the wine in check brilliantly and provides balance. The blend for 2021 also includes some of the estate’s prized Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot. A little bit of patience here will be key. This has a great future ahead of it.

This characterful Crémant de Bourgogne is made predominantly from Chardonnay, with a proportion of Pinot Noir, Gamay and Aligoté thrown in for good measure and additional complexity. 2021 Moscato d'Asti, Marcarini, Piedmont
Brilliant straw-yellow color with soft green reflections. A delicate white froth evolves into a very fine and persistent perlage. Its full nose is aromatic, floral and fruity as well as intense and persistent. The taste, which is pleasantly sweet and refreshing due to the low alcohol content and correct acidity, is smooth and rich with musky sensations typical of the Moscato grape - the wine's aromatic persistence is very long and intense. This is the dessert wine par excellence and it pairs well with fresh pastries and cakes, traditional panettone, all kinds of baked desserts as well as fruit.

2019 Savoie, Gringet, Les Perles du Mont-Blanc, Brut, Domaine du Gringet
This fabulous traditional method sparkling wine is made in the Haute-Savoie village of Ayse from 100% Gringet, a rare local grape endemic to this region. The lemon gold colour and fine bubbles suggest this is a cut above many sparkling wines. This is confirmed on the nose with hints of yellow apple, pear and cape gooseberry mingling superbly with notes of bread and brioche.
The crisp, fresh palate has a delicate yellow peach and sweet apple edge. The freshness is wonderful, a signature quality of wines made from Gringet, and really lifts this lovely fizz on the bright, energetic finish.

The pale lemon coloured 2016 Lions de Suduiraut gives up quite earthy scents of fungi, moss and fallen leaves over a core of peach preserves, dried apricots, poached pears and orange marmalade. The palate is beautifully layered with stone fruit and citrus notions, framed with just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.

2023 Casamatta Bianco, Bibi Graetz, Tuscany, Italy
This is the baby Testamatta Bianco. It is produced using the youngest vines on the island of Giglio. The grapes are hand harvested and vinified entirely in stainless steel. The fermentation temperatures are kept low, protecting the wine’s fresh, crisp brilliance. The coastal fingerprint is unmistakable, the palate awash with grapefruit peel and lemon peel. Also present is the signature salty, fennel-like refreshment and complexity typical of Bibi Graetz’s whites. You may not have heard of Ansonica (the dominant grape), but you will certainly be pleased you found it.

2021 Joey Tensley, Fundamental Red, Central Coast, California, USA
Joey Tensley was inspired by the wines of the Rhône Valley so it is hardly a surprise that he has made such a lovely red blend based on Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and a little bit of Viognier. Sweet red cherry fruit dominates the nose. Red cherries and strawberries continue on the palate, yet the forward fruit is perfectly offset by a savoury edge, adding interest and complexity. The wine is balanced and fine, and the nuanced flavours linger on the generous, fresh and elegant finish.

2022 Grüner Veltliner, Kamptaler Terrassen, Willi Bründlmayer, Kamptal, Austria
The Kamptal region of Austria is home to some of the world’s most masterful wines, and this cuvée from Weingut Bründlmayer is an incredibly good-value window into its unique terroir and expert winemaking. The colour is a bright, straw yellow, and the nose bursts with aromatics, with ripe apples and hints of elderflower and acacia flowers. The palate is beautifully smooth, with flavours of ripe peaches paired with a mouthwatering minerality, reminiscent of the stony soils upon which the Grüner Veltliner is planted, up on the elevated terraces. This finish is long, finessed and very energetic. A versatile and immensely enjoyable wine, pair with Asian cuisine and seafood dishes.

2018 Chianti Classico, Filetta di Lamole, Fontodi, Tuscany, Italy
Within the Fontodi portfolio, this wine is the outlier, and it should be considered as such. The organic 2018 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole sources its fruit from a cooler growing site that is very different from the sun-drenched basin known as the Conca d'Oro in Panzano. Vineyards in Lamole are perched at a higher elevation, at a breezy 600 meters above sea level, and the soils see a greater presence of sandstone. This wine shows lots of brightness and resonance over a snappy, lean-bodied style. The bouquet delivers blue flower, wild cherry and rose. It ages in large oak casks for two years. Production is 20,000 bottles. 2021-2026. - Wine Advocate 91/100

Hambledon, Classic Cuvée, Sparkling, Hampshire, England
52% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Noir, and 17 % Pinot Meunier from the 2018 harvest, with tank-aged reserve wines added. Dosage 5.7 g/l.
Fruits of the 2011 harvest, with reserve sines added from 2010, this is a most impressive effort, its lees-ageing imparting gentle biscuity notes and adding weight and structure to the first impressions, which recall English orchard fruit, yellow fruits and quince.

2018 Alexandre Bain, La Levée, Vin de France
This 2.5h plot is located closest to the winery and has a complex clay, loam and sand topsoil before the vines’ roots hit the limestone. The cuvee undergoes 42 months of ageing, the longest of all cuvees. The nose is very complex and deep with aromas of apricot, rhubarb, quince and baked apples with a touch of cinnamon.
The palate has an underlining salinity, giving the wine great freshness and an extra dimension to the fresh tropical fruits and floral notes. It is very expansive on the mid-palate with a great acid structure. This wine is very giving and has an impressive balance, encapsulating huge complexity.

2019 Riesling, Domaine Rolly-Gassmann, Alsace
The historic Domaine Rolly Gassmann dates back to the 17th century. The 2019 growing season allowed the grapes to ripen gradually, resulting in a wine of perfect balance and freshness. The nose is intense, bright and enticing, with lemon sherbet and orange blossom. Upon tasting, there’s refreshing acidity and notes of citrus and stone-fruit, cushioned by a hint of sweetness that demands another sip. With a clean and saline finish, this is best enjoyed with fish or grilled-cheese dishes.

2021 La Rosa Branco, Quinta de la Rosa, Douro, Portugal
Quinta de la Rosa’s iconic Branco is made with a field blend of old vines indigenous to the region: 50% Côdega de Larinho, 25% Rabigato and 25% Viosinho. It is mostly fermented in small stainless-steel vats to retain the natural freshness and purity of these varieties. The nose is enticingly floral, with notes of greengage and honeysuckle. The palate retains the delicacy of soft apricot and pear flavours. The schist and granite soils in these vineyards, among the most prized terroir in the Douro, give this wine a remarkable tension and minerality on the finish. Enjoy with lean fish or cured meats.
