Description

50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot.

This is a very juicy wine and, in line with many of the most famous estates his year, remains faithful to the style of the Grand Vin. A lightness, a soft fruit profile and a tannic structure balanced by beguiling acidity. It is seriously refreshing on the finish. The fruit has a lushness, good weight, and a sense of poise. The property is clearly happy with the result, as they certainly should be. This is a good second wine from 2014; it is authentic, positive, and enjoyable.

Jancis Robinson MW 17.5/20

Tasted blind

Deep ruby and youthful in colour. Refined, stony mineral aroma with lots of elegant black fruit. Lovely wine with firm tannic structure and excellent balance.

The 2014 La Dame de Montrose is more precocious than Lafon-Rochet on the nose, with hints of dried cherries and black olive compote infusing the black fruit, touches of humidor and red brick. The palate is medium-bodied with dusky black fruit, fine tannins and a little austerity towards the finish, though at least it does exude Saint-Estèphe DNA. Give it a year in bottle.

An even Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend: lots of spice, deep cassis fruit and incredible freshness. It will show soon and last well.

As to the 2014s, these are beautiful wines and certainly a match for the 2015s. The 2014 La Dame de Montrose offers a deep purple colour, classic Cabernet Sauvignon notes, and a touch of violets, spring flowers and leafy herbs. This medium-bodied, elegant, spicy, complex 2014 has loads of charm yet should keep nicely for 15 years.

What a nose for a second wine! Lovely cassis and delicately leafy/earthy aromas. It’s a rare beast: a really mineral red Bordeaux. This has an excellent balance of ripeness and fresh, dry tannins and acidity. Long, clean finish.

It is ideal with an hour's carafe.

Intense, smoky, and withplenty of black fruit, who doesn't love this 2nd wine of Château Montrose? It's a vintage that is often overlooked, particularly after the recent great years Bordeaux has had, but it's at a great moment to open right now and delivers a ton of St Estèphe and Left Bank typicity, with crayon and graphite. Harvest September 22 to October 16.

Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the most important communes of the Médoc and borders Pauillac on its southernmost border, with only a gully and stream separates it from Ch. Lafite. To the north lies the Bas-Médoc. Saint-Estèphe is defined by the depth of its gravel, which is ubiquitous but of varying depths and occasionally very shallow, when clay predominates. This keeps the soil cooler and wetter than its counterparts so that the wines can appear fresh in lighter vintages, but superbly successful in hot, dry years. The best châteaux in the south of the commune have the deepest soil and the thickest gravel.

Cos d'Estournel has an exceptional terroir with its vineyards being located on a south-facing ridge of gravel with excellent drainage. Saint-Estèphe is the least gravelly of main Médoc communes and in the north of the commune the vineyards are heavier and more clay-based leading to a rustic style of wine being produced. The wines can appear austere in youth with a discernable ferric note at some châteaux, but the best typically display good depth of colour, pronounced acidity an tannins in youth and are exceptionally long-lived. At their best, they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux.

The well-regarded St Estèphe co-operative controls the production of about half the appellation. Recommended Châteaux Cos (Ch. Cos d'Estournel), Ch. Montrose, Ch. Calon-Ségur, Ch. Lafon-Rochet, Ch. Les Ormes de Pez, Ch. Beau-Site, Ch. Cos Labory, Ch. Phélan-Ségur.
