Berry Bros. & Rudd Champagne by Mailly, Grand Cru, Brut
Sourced from the prestigious Grand Cru village of Mailly, located at the heart of the Montagne de Reims, and benefiting from over three years ageing, our UKC Cuvée is a classic blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay.
All the hallmarks of Grand Cru are here, with brioche and flowers on the nose and an elegant palate which marries notes of lemon grass, gingerbread and honeysuckle. The wine effortlessly combines structure and finesse and reverberates with a really authoritative Grand Cru crescendo on the finish.

2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary Claret by Dourthe, Bordeaux
Our biggest seller for decades, “GOC is a carefully assembled blend from some of Bordeaux’s best terroirs. Merlot makes up 67% of the blend, giving the wine its silky richness. The balance is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, adding power and structure. After a year in oak, this shows why Claret is such a perennial favourite: warm, savoury aromas of cedar and woodsmoke, with supple cassis and blackberry on the palate. Designed for early drinking, this is a comfortable partner for most food, and is soft enough to be enjoyed on its own.

Appearance: Light.
Bouquet: Well balanced, with Peat aromas giving the edge. Fruity undertones deliver a rich complexity.

2021 Berry Bros. & Rudd Argentinian Malbec by Pulenta, Mendoza
This wine has a fine, ripe raspberry nose with a blackberry depth and a savoury edge. The palate is ultra smooth, yet the fruit here is still juicy and fresh, reminiscent of a raspberry-and-blackberry pie. It is so generous and giving yet so integrated and harmonious. The tannins are like soft flakes which blend seamlessly on the long, damson-and-cranberry-edged finish.

2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir by Benjamin Leroux
If you order only one red Burgundy this autumn, make it this one. Every facet of stunning Côte d'Or Pinot Noir is present in this creation and the price is as competitive as I have seen this year for any epic-quality wine made from this fabulous grape. Ben Leroux's skills are well-known and here he draws on fruit harvested from od vines in Chorey-lès-Beaune to craft this expressive, silky-red-cherry perfumed wine. It is young, but there is already much to adore, from the pristine clarity of aroma and flavour to the delightfully refreshing finish
Matthew Jukes, Wine of the Week, Money Week (October 2023)
Made in collaboration with Benjamin Leroux, our Bourgogne Côte d’Or comes from old vines planted in the appellation of Chorey-lès-Beaune. The 2022 vintage seamlessly marries explosive red-berry fruit with refreshing acidity and sweet tannins. Spicy floral top notes and a hint of vanilla oak provide further complexity. This would be an excellent match with roasted poultry, grilled meats and soft cheeses.

When the classification arrives in 2020, this will be the highest-altitude Premier Cru in Pouilly-Fuissé: it’s over 300 metres above sea level. There’s a little more ripeness to the nose here, but the palate retains the signature freshness of the vineyard. A star performer this year, this has wonderful salinity and minerality. 2019 Berry Bros. & Rudd Margaux by Château Angludet
Our 2019 Own Selection Margaux by Château Angludet is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. It also saw 50% amphorae ageing – a first for the estate – but one that softens tannins without over-reliance on oak. Gently floral top notes make way for darker hedgerow fruit, cassis, and a hint of pencil shavings. The palate is generous and rich, with round, velvety tannins, while a dose of acidity navigates through the layers of blackberries and blueberries, bringing balance and elegance.

2017 Sadie Family Wines, Columella, Swartland, South Africa
This 2017 Columella is the first of Ehe drought years Eto be bottled and this very wine stands as evidence of the great stability to be achieved in a region with multiple varieties and vineyards planted in diverse sites. It shows that the greatest and most stable quality is to be achieved by a selection of vineyards rather than just one. The expression of a singular site has its place, but there is simply no better strategy than the combination of a bigger variety of terroirs to build up the most stable representation of our region. This wine is the result of 12 months ageing in barrels (8% new) and thereafter an additional 12 months in old, big oval casks. This 2017 vintage has incredible tension and density and is very much ‘locked in E The firmness of the wine suggests that it is a great keeper. It does exhibit amazing herbal, spicy and perfumed aromas and there is more than enough fruit Ebut it is a highly-strung wine that needs time. The tannins are fine, powdery and almost silky with lower acidity and more expanded palate than the 2014 and 2016. The wine is super-tight and will require at least 2 hours of decantation if opened prior to 5 years of age in the bottle.
Review 27th April 2020 by Eben Sadie & Paul Jordaan:
Perplexing, in that there is almost no point of entry on the wine from an aromatic or taste aspect and the wine is still holding its cards to the chest. It does have some of the earthy aspects that were found in the early 2006 vintage. This wine is incredibly dry and restrained at this point but shouts of potential into the future. It will possibly develop into the same incredible complexities as was the case in the 2002 & 2004 vintage, but it needs the next 20 years to reveal itself.{***} {region}Swartland{region} {color}Red{color} {maturity}ready-improve{maturity} {maturity-text}Ready, but will improve{maturity-text} {vintage}2017{vintage} {***}

Den, Junmai Daiginjo, Sake, Katsuyama
A junmai daiginjo at the pinnacle of traditional sake brewing, it features a fruity aroma and distinct rich flavors. Of special note is that, unlike daiginjo sake made by adding alcohol, this sake has the true characteristics of a junmai daiginjo. The crisp and clean umami stands out clearly and lingers as a distinct aftertaste. It is an excellent choice for drinking with tuna sashimi, from fatty to medium fatty and red, and with salmon sushi or other flavorful foods. It also goes well with meat and meat dishes, whether prepared in Japanese or western styles, and other such foods that bring out the umami.

2019 Berry Bros. & Rudd St Julien by Château Branaire-Ducru, Bordeaux
This is our first St Julien made by Château Branaire-Ducru. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, but an almost equal dose of Merlot ensures a soft, approachable style. The nose is perfumed and fruit-driven, with raspberries and blackberries lifted by floral aromas and a hint of menthol. The palate is juicy and moreish, with blackcurrants layered upon hedgerow berries and vibrant redcurrants. The tannins are generous but silky, bringing structure and depth. Enjoy it with roast vegetables or chicken, though it certainly holds its own alongside a leg of lamb.

Champagne Pol Roger, Réserve, Brut
The style of Pol Roger is always about opulence, sophistication and purity, and their flagship wine, Réserve Brut, is the epitome of their craft. This is a careful balance of the three noble varieties of Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Meunier, grown across 30 of the region’s most desired villages. Although this is a non-vintage Champagne, this Réserve Brut is made mainly from the harmonious 2020 vintage, with 25% reserve wine. The reserve wine is held in steel tank, a blend of older vintages adding weight and complexity to the palate.
Aged for four years, longer than many non-vintage Champagnes, this additional time on lees guarantees the toasted patisserie flavours but also gives the finest, foaming effervescence. White gold in the glass, with a nose of golden pear, tangerine and fresh almond croissant. The palate dances with white peach, clean lemon pith, golden crumb and crescendos with a saffron-infused, chalk stream finish. A Champagne which reminds you what Champagne should be.

2010 Champagne Dom Pérignon
Apricot, pastry, chamomile, mint and light tropical notes are all signatures of a hot vintage with a very fast final phase of ripening that trails only 2002 and 2003 in terms of sugars. Of course, the year had plenty of challenges. The first part of the year was marked by cold and very dry weather during the winter and spring. June saw heat and some stress in the vines. July and August were quite warm, with heavy rains on August 15 and 16 that caused a widespread outbreak of botrytis that accelerated rapidly in the days leading up to harvest. Chef de Caves Vincent Chaperon explained that Chardonnay was favored over Pinot because better aeration within the clusters helped fend off rot, while parcels that had been less stressed by the June heat also suffered less from the effects of botrytis. Perhaps because of the unevenness in the season, there is also something disjointed about the 2010. While sugars were high, so were acidities, just behind 2008 in the decade of the 2000s. It will be interesting to see where the 2010 goes over time. It is the first vintage made under the direction of Vincent Chaperon, who worked alongside outgoing Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy for many years. Drink 2021-2035. Antonio Galloni

2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Pauillac by Ch. Lynch Bages
For the 2020 vintage, we continue our long relationship with the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages. The nose is bright and fragrant, with notes of cassis, brambles and wild cherries. The palate brings more wild-berry complexity and a warming note of cedar spice from the oak barriques used during maturation.
True to its Pauillac origins, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend. Merlot was particularly strong in 2020; the higher proportion than usual (36%) brings a subtle roundness to the palate. This is an approachable yet wonderfully elegant expression of Pauillac.

2017 Berry Bros. & Rudd Late Bottled Vintage Port by Quinta de la Rosa
This LBV comes from one of only a handful of “declared” vintages from the last decade. As such, it is characterised by its concentration, elegance and depth of flavour. The nose is elegant, with fine black and red berries, Christmas-cake spice and a light touch of fresh vanilla.
The palate is impressively restrained, the sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit balanced by more complex touches of orange peel and toasted walnuts. The finish is long and refreshing for a Port; all is so well balanced, making it very easy to take another sip.

2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Swartland Red by The Sadie Family Wines, South Africa
Splurge on the magnificent 2022 Berry Bros Swartland Red by the Sadie family. It’s a wonderfully seductive Syrah with layer after layer of fat, fleshy, spicy incense and bramble fruit.
Jane MacQuitty, The Times (February 2024)
We’re thrilled to work with the legendary Eben Sadie for our Swartland Red, a new addition to our Own Selection. Eben has planted some incredible new vineyards over the last decade. In the future, he’ll use the fruit of these young vines for his own signature wines. But for now, he is working exclusively with us on our Swartland Red and Swartland White.
The precise blend will change from one year to the next; our 2022 Swartland Red is made from 100% Syrah fruit. With pure, freshly picked raspberries on the nose, the palate has deep, fleshy, bramble fruits and gravelly minerality. A delicate umami note lingers on the invigorating finish.

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune, Benjamin Leroux
This is deliciously moreish, with sweet strawberry fruit and cranberry bite for lift. The final blend will also include some wine aged in large foudre, which adds a heartier, richer texture and rounds out the wine. Simple but not one-dimensional. Drink 2019-2023.
It is fair to say that Ben is very happy with 2017, describing it as the kind of vintage he would sign up for every year. The whites, he says, are beautiful, and not far from 2014 in style, with purity, finesse, great definition and balance. He describes the reds as pretty, appealing and with body to support ageing, while highlighting the importance of lower-yielding old vines for serious ageing. He eloquently explains that there is no “black sheep Ein 2017, that no village has underperformed. A cinnamon, nutmeg and peppery nose immediately thrusts the spicy signature of rye into the forefront of the conversation, with the savoury palate and moreishly dry finish confirming this impression. 2017 Berry Bros. & Rudd Sauternes by Château Suduiraut
Pure nectar, this heavenly French dessert wine can be savoured on its own, or paired with fruit tarts such as apricot or duck liver parfait. With luscious flavours of apricots, honey, orange blossom and exotic candied fruits, harmonious citrusy acidity keeps everything in check. Serve chilled in your prettiest crystal, and this golden elixir will bring smiles all round.
Sam Wylie-Harris, IrishNews.com (December 2023)
Our Sauternes has been made by Château Suduiraut. This is an early-drinking style of Sauternes, with bright aromas of orange blossom and candied apricot. The palate is ripe and glossy, with flavours of quince and white peach along with sweet undertones of allspice, stem ginger and honey. The blend is led by Sémillon, bringing a balancing bite of citrus to the finish. You can enjoy it year-round, and it’s delicious with most hard or blue cheeses.

2020 The Sadie Family Wines, Pofadder, Ouwingerdreeks, Swartland
“Like Soldaat, Pofadder was fermented with fewer whole bunches in 2020, giving the wine more fruit purity and focus. Beautifully framed and complete, it's an old-vine Cinsault that combines focus with depth. Black cherry, raspberry and sweet spice notes play out across the palate with a lovely stony undertone. 2022-30. E/span>

2017 Berry Bros. & Rudd Brunello di Montalcino by La Màgia, Tuscany, Italy
Our Brunello is made by Fattoria La Màgia. Here at this small organic estate, Fabian Schwarz creates terroir-focused wines from Sangiovese grown at high altitudes. This 2017 Brunello is graceful, with a heady nose of black cherries, smoky pepper and dried flowers. On the palate, succulent forest fruits and juicy plums are framed by tight, glossy tannins. It is vividly tangy and fresh with a stony, mineral grip.

2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Swartland White by The Sadie Family Wines, South Africa
We’re delighted to work with the legendary Eben Sadie for our Swartland White, a brand-new wine in our Own Selection. Eben has been planting some wonderful new vineyards over the last 10 years. In the future, he’ll use the grapes from these young vines to produce his own signature wines. For now, though, he is working exclusively with us on our Swartland White and Swartland Red.
The precise blend will change from one vintage to another; our 2022 Swartland White is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc. The nose is lively, with notes of yellow apple, white flowers and honey. The palate is gorgeous with tart white peach, fine minerality and a hint of tangerine. The finish is fresh and wonderfully pure.

2021 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary White by Dourthe, Bordeaux
This was an outstanding vintage for white Bordeaux and our “GOW”, skilfully made by Dourthe. The nose is bright and aromatic, with notes of lime, flower, elderflower and green tea leaf. The palate brings exotic fruits, typical of its 100% Sauvignon Blanc makeup. Swathes of citrus and white peach lead to a zesty burst of acidity. No oak is used, allowing the crisp, mineral profile to speak for itself. This is perfect as an apéritif or with lighter fish or chicken dishes.

2021 Bourgogne Blanc, Benjamin Leroux
Of Benjamin Leroux’s vines, only those around Meursault survived the frost. As it was impossible to save everything, Benjamin had to choose what to protect, opting to sacrifice his vines in the Hautes-Côtes and instead making just 80hl. His Bourgogne Blanc is an elegant and fresh style of wine, which displays some mid-palate solidity from the frost. Drink 2022 – 2026.

Berrys' Islay Reserve, Blended Malt Whisky, 46.0%
The small Hebridean island of Islay is famous for its heavily peat-smoke flavoured Malt Whiskies. Beyond the obvious peatiness each Islay Malt Whisky offers its own signature. Our Reserve has been created by our blenders to capture the very essence of the Islay style. Aromas reminiscent of quaysides emerge. Beyond the distinctive smoky core, there is a seam of subtle yellow fruit. The deep smokiness of the palate leaves a kiss of peat which lingers long into the finish. In short, this is an Islay drinker’s Islay.

We are very proud of this crisp and refreshing white wine. A fine, fresh nose of yellow apple and pear leads on to an exceptionally mineral palate with a light yellow-peach character and singing freshness. Made from 100% Chardonnay, this really over-delivers for a wine at this price. It is layered, complex and utterly delicious.

2017 Beaune, Vignes Franches, 1er Cru, Dominique Lafon, Burgundy
This parcel of old vines is situated at the top of the vineyard, alongside Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches. The aromas are of red and black fruit, with some spice adding complexity. On the palate, it is all cherry, with real richness, plenty of power and chalky but ripe tannins. The finish is creamy and floral. Drink 2022-2027.
After the famine of 2016, this year is something of a feast, at least in the case of the reds. Sadly, the whites, which Dominique praises as having excellent clarity, are in slightly smaller volumes than 2016. The good news is that the full range of red wines has been made, and in good volume too. Dominique is effusive in his praise for the 2017 reds, describing them as appealing, with beautiful balance, a lightness of touch, refined tannins and a floral character with stunning red fruit.

Delicately pale in colour, this rosé is elegant and pure, with fresh strawberry aromas complemented by hints of mint and raspberry tea. 2005 Ch. Calon-Ségur, St Estèphe
This is a wonderfully constructed wine, with very fine, silky tannins and an intense core of classic brambly St Estèphe fruit with a whiff of mulberries. It is pure and fresh with the 60% Cabernet Sauvignon - brooding, as if waiting to leap out - very much to the fore. This is completely different to their famous 2003, and although Madame will not be drawn on the matter, we certainly think it is considerably superior.

2018 Vosne-Romanée, Les Hautes Maizières, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Bruno Clavelier
This old vines cuvée comes from a tiny parcel of vines nearly 79 years in age that were planted by Massale Selection. The sub-soil here is chalk but there's limestone and clay up above. This is a structured red Burgundy that's powerful and will benefit from age. The majority of the domaine's vines are old vines (Massale) planted in the 1930s and 40s. Naturally the yields are miniscule for this reason making this wine all the more rare.

2019 Moulin-à-Vent, En Mortperay, Domaine A.-F. Gros, Beaujolais
The domaine purchased 3.80ha of the lieu-dit En Mortperay in 2017, half a hectare very new, the rest with 60-year-old vines. The grapes are brought to Beaune, vinified as whole bunches, one tank of three under carbonic maceration for ten days, the other two more classic.
Ageing is partly in foudre, completed by 228-litre barrels. This is really interesting as it starts like a floral pinot and finishes more on gamay. Really quite lovely and with some crunchiness too.

Hambledon, Classic Cuvée Rosé, Sparkling, Hampshire, England
Hambledon Vineyard has a long and fascinating history. Not only does the village have the reputation as the cradle of cricket, long before Lord’s, it seems, but it is also the location of the first English commercial vineyard, courtesy of the Francophile Sir Guy Salisbury Jones, who developed the vineyards in the early 1950s.
After an uneventful hiatus, the vineyard was purchased by Ian Kellett in 1999, and his investments of both patience and capital are now yielding fruit, quite literally, in the form of some of the best-located Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes in the country.
A beautiful vivid pink with a bright red berry hue, it displays an array of wild strawberry aromas on the nose that lead to a generous, complex palate of buttered toast, ripe lemon and juicy hedgerow fruit.

2018 L'Etoile, En Banode, Domaine de Montbourgeau, Jura
A blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Savagnin, this is in essence a mini Vin Jaune, aged for a year in oak foudres (casks) before going into barrel for the “sous voile” ageing for a further two years. The La Banode vineyard was planted in 1970 and gives wines that are powerful but delicate. The warm and dry 2018 vintage has yielded a generous yet saline wine with notes of salted almonds and citrus zest.

Benjamin Leroux is perhaps best known as a négociant, but he now owns a significant proportion of his own vineyards. He bought fruit from this 0.5-hectare parcel until eventually buying the land in 2021. The soil is light and sandy with brown gravel, giving a perfumed and pretty wine that has a light and delicate structure. Five barrels were made in 2017. The 2021 Treinspoor is Sadie's Tinta Barocca that the man himself likens to Nebbiolo, also opining that it is a wine that needs considerable ageing. These vines were planted in 1974, and the blend includes 40% whole clusters. It has a complex, succinctly defined bouquet with melted tar and graphite infused dark berry fruit, a hint of Lapsang Souchong. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly-tuned acidity, almost Burgundian in texture yet with more pepperiness towards the finish. Champagne Bollinger is famed for its rich house style. This is partly because 80% of each Bollinger harvest is matured in oak barrels adding depth, complexity and texture. 2017 Volnay, Frémiets, 1er Cru, Domaine du Comte ArmandThis is beautifully heady and perfumed. Some parcels are nearly 90 years old, and others 35 years old, with the crop a healthy 49.6hl/ha. Again, there is the impression of purity, sensuality and structure, aided in part by the contiguity of Pommard-Jarolières. Drink 2022-2028.
Paul Zinetti was realistic yet confident in the quality of his 2017s. Such an early harvest, which started in Volnay Frémiets on 3rd September and ended in Auxey on 11th September, provided new challenges which Paul addressed creatively and sympathetically. The wines were fruity and direct but he found that colour and structure were slow to come, so he kept the wine on skins for a week or more after fermentation. There is less whole-bunch this year as the stems weren’t always fully ripe, but his de-stemmer preserves a lot of whole berries anyway. He will bottle all the reds before Christmas without filtration but he will trial some fining to round out the tannins.

Still tightly wound after its recent bottling, this has a long and glorious future ahead of it. 2021 Eben Sadie Columella, Swartland
This 2021 vintage of Columella displays extremely bright red fruit aromas. The wine is incredibly fresh, and the 24 months of ageing in old casks are unmarked; it almost seems like the fruit is still hanging on the vine. Some velvety spicey herbal aromas of the bush come through on the aromatics, and then violets and perfumes followed. There are darker, deeper lines of graphite, black olive and cedarwood aromatics, and the structure of the wine is quite seamless; the tannins flow into the acidity at the end of the palate. It is incredibly balanced, and delicate layers of stitching make up this wine. Time is your friend on this one.

2007 Champagne Le Mesnil, Cuvée Prestige, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru, Brut
2007 Champagne Le Mesnil, Cuvée Prestige, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru Champagne is a spectacular 100% Chardonnay from their fabled vineyards. Drinking at its peak with so much drama and class in a glass, this is a heroic wine with an unmissable price tag.
Matthew Jukes, Money Week (October 2023)
2007 was a vintage which favoured Chardonnay and produced many top-level cuvées. The Les Mesnil Cuvée Prestige is made exclusively from the legendary chalky Grand Cru vineyards, close to the winery in the Cote des Blancs’s most famous postcode, Le Mesnil sur Oger. The Blanc de Blancs is fermented in cement and steel at low temperatures to retain the purity of fruit and vintage personality and spent nine years on lees gaining complexity and fine, tight bubbles.
The texture is firmly Grand Cru, with mineral edges and notes of golden apple, roasted lemon and the salty chew of caramel shortbread. The Prestige 2007 is a work of art and offers brilliant value, considering it is made from some of the region’s finest terroirs. Drink with mixed canapés, cheesy biscuits or, for the ultimate experience, turbot and a white butter sauce.

2019 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Le Vigne, Faraone, Abruzzo, Italy
Abruzzo’s most famous red wine, Federico’s, is crafted from two different sites: a fresher, hilltop vineyard that gives perfume and elegance and traditional pergola vines that give broader fruit structure.
After fermentation in an inox tank, the wine is aged for two years in large oak botti. The results are a multi-layered expression of Montepulciano, aromatically complex: baked earth, heady spices, and dark berry fruits. Deep in colour, the palate has real depth. Wild spices, loaded with baked and bright black fruits, are framed by soft, chewy, coco-coated, damson-like tannins. Perfect with strong cheese or spicy tomato-based pasta dishes.

2017 Saumur Blanc Breze, Domaine Guiberteau, Loire
The Saumur Blanc Breze is sourced from two old vine parcels of Chenin Blanc planted in 1933 & 1952. 1.2 hectares in total. Brézé is not typical Saumur at all. The vineyards are at a higher elevation than most of the surrounding area and sit directly on a hill of tuffeau—a porous, chalky limestone intermixed with clay and sand. Something like 70% of the vineyard has less than one metre of topsoil so the vines of any age must establish roots in the chalky bedrock. This terroir creates a far more citrus, floral and mineral expression of Chenin. Even in ripe and powerful vintages, the wines remain cool, pure and fresh.

Champagne Bollinger, PN VZ19, Brut
The potential alcohol content was record high from the start, especially in Aÿ, with 11.1% straight away. Denis, just like me, sees great similarities between 2015 and 2019, but where the sharpness and freshness is better in 2019. It is not the acidity, but rather the mineral salt that gives the freshness together with the sense of umami the concentrated grapes give. Here, there is a swirl of exotic fruit and honey and a dry smokiness that I’ve learned to associate with the cluster of aromas that transforms over time into the note of railway on a hot summer’s day. It might sound fuzzy, but it makes perfect sense.
The combination of heated rail, dry gravel, dandelions and nettles that thrive in the embankment gives a concentrated, warm dryness strongly reminiscent of the character the grapes acquire when the temperature crosses the vine’s pain point on a few hot summer days. 41 degrees in the shade was a heat record in Champagne, especially a lot of shade, which the vineyards in Champagne cannot boast of, so the effect is reminiscent of that which arose in 1947, 1959, 1976, and 2003. Hence, this aroma was less marked in 2019. Let’s see if I’m right in 10 years when I expect “The Famous Note of Railroad Track” to appear in this beauty.

2007 El Pison, Artadi, Rioja
The secret of Tempranillo seems to reside in its hidden depth; gregarious and initially appearing far too attractive to be remotely serious, this wine gradually revels the true depth of its personality; the black fruits are ripe of course , but are backed by notes of laurel, licorice, garrigue and forest floor; the tannins are finely-tuned needless to say, but are swathed in a fine minerality; all in all this is clearly very fine indeed. Juan Carlos thinks it more closely resembles 2004 than 2001, but is sure that it will be better than both of them.

2018 Vosne-Romanée, La Combe Brûlée, Domaine Bruno Clavelier
One of the most beautiful vineyards of Terroir, with its more than 85 years of life, lives vibrant in the contrast between the freshness of the winds of the Combe and the heat held by the sunny pebbles of the ground.

2001 Château Calon Ségur, St Estèphe, Bordeaux
The 2001 Calon-Ségur has a delightful bouquet, very pure and a little more vivacious than the preceding vintage, featuring lovely brambly red fruit, rose petals, autumn leaves and a touch of cigar box, all well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little more cohesive than the 2000, and slightly granular in texture, with a graceful, elegant and quite persistent finish. This is one of the few châteaux where it's difficult to choose between the 2001 and 2000. Drinking perfectly now. Drink 2021 - 2045

2019 Riesling, Bockstein, Grosses Gewächs, Van Volxem, Mosel, Germany
The Ockfen 2019 Bockstein Riesling GG opens with an intense, dense and elegant, flinty and slightly iron-scented bouquet that displays perfectly ripe and healthy, somewhat flinty Riesling fruit with lemon chutney notes. Intense, ripe and very elegant on the densely textured and a bit more creamy than crystalline palate, this is a full-bodied, lush and round yet very fine and sustainably salty and tensioned Bockstein. It has highly delicate tannins on the complex and sustainable finish that again shows generous, perfectly ripe Riesling fruit with lingering lemon juice notes. Tasted from AP 35 20 in March 2021.

2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay, Les Hauts de la Combe, Domaine Joseph Colin
From two plots so now called Les Hauts de la Combe to bring in the names of the two lieux -dits. This has been bottled without fining or filtering. Pale colour, light yellow fruit, but again these are not high levels of ripeness. Very slight confection at the back but a good volume of fruit and excellent clean acidity.

2010 Berry Bros. & Rudd Auchroisk, Cask No 807784, Speyside, Single Malt Whisky (61%)
Auchroisk roughly translates from Gaelic as "shallow ford across the red river". This refers to the proximity of the distillery to the Mulben Burn, although it is the quality of water drawn from Dorie’s Well that is said to have decided the location of Auchroisk prior to construction in 1972.
There is a sweet fruitiness to the nose, with notes of red apple skin and custard cut by hints of paprika. The palate is thick and generous, with spice returning to add an enlivening and unusual kick to the fruit and rosewater elements. It’s lingering and complex to the last.

2020 The Sadie Family Wines, Treinspoor, Ouwingerdreeks, Swartland
Eben has worked for ten years with these old bush vines of Tinta Barocca planted in 1974. He highlights that, “…it has most probably been the greatest red variety planted in the Swartland... It just transports terroir and the typicality of the site much more successfully than most other red varietals. E/span>
"We're doing an enormous amount of work in the vineyard to recuperate it," says Eben Sadie of his beloved Tinta Barocca, "and trying to extract less in the winery." Showing its classic grip and tannins, this has damson, liquorice and tar-like flavours and aromas, appealingly rustic tannins and the structure to age. Nebbiolo meets Syrah. 2023-32. E/span>

2005 Champagne Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Blanc de Blancs, Brut
2005 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is finely aromatic, a rich and creamy Blanc de Blancs at its very best. Although the 2005 can be enjoyed from release, a decade of patience will be well rewarded.
When Pierre Taittinger first discovered the Champagne region, he was a young officer during the First World War. He returned several years later to invest his energy into developing a family-owned independent Champagne house in Reims which is still managed by the Taittinger family today.
Francois Taittinger chose Chardonnay as the dominant grape as he believed that modern tastes would increasingly appreciate the lightness, finesse and elegance of the Chardonnay grape in their flagship offering - Comtes de Champagne - first produced in 1952.
“We will never produce a large quantity of Comtes de Champagne because the technical characteristics we require so that this cuvée can be a very great wine are essentially unique in Champagne and very financially demanding.
The Comtes de Champagne displays an eternal youth derived from our province’s greatest Chardonnay, a triumphant blend of force and elegance. Connoisseurs will appreciate it.” Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger

2021 Berry Bros. & Rudd Sonoma County Chardonnay by Ramey Wine Cellars
We are so proud to once again work with Ramey Wine Cellars for our 2021 Sonoma County Chardonnay. The wine has a fresh lemon and lime nose, complemented by a subtle savoury twist. The palate is full of yellow apple, along with a gorgeous citrus focus and salty precision. The long finish echoes with gentle hints of roasted almonds. This is an utterly delicious and delightfully fresh Californian Chardonnay.

2019 Berry Bros. & Rudd Gevrey-Chambertin by Rossignol-Trapet, Burgundy
Our Gevrey-Chambertin has once again been made for us by Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. Their venerable old vines cover all areas of Gevrey-Chambertin, giving a rich picture of the appellation. The warm and sunny 2019 vintage has given a spicy, dark-fruited expression of the village with silky tannins and an irresistible floral perfume. This is an ideal partner to ripe cheeses or tagine.

2019 Marsannay Rouge, Cuvée Saint-Urbain, Domaine Jean Fournier, Burgundy
This classy cuvée has a floral and spice-accented bouquet. Blended from around the appellation, there’s 25% whole-bunch; élevage is in 500-litre barrels, one-quarter of which are new. The palate invites with juicy red fruit and supple tannins. Cooling acidity provides balance; it’s a very complete wine. It’ll drink well early but can be cellared with confidence.
Drink 2021 - 2027
Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is exuberant, with a little touch of liquorice and some acidity; this has density and quality, but what about personality? Good wine, as it happens, but I understand it is a hard sell.
