St Aubin might today be better known for its white wines, but the appellation was planted primarily to Pinot Noir until quite recently. It produces pleasing, light-bodied expressions of red Burgundy with refreshing, chalky tannins. This example comes from from one of the first estates to domaine-bottle their wines here. It’s a blend of two Premiers Crus, Les Combes and Sur le Sentier du Clou; it offers generous, rounded red-berry fruit to accompany the natural energy and crunch of St Aubin. There’s some subtle sweet spice and smoke on the nose, ripe strawberry fruit, supple and friendly tannins and a chalky finish. This is a versatile red Burgundy to be enjoyed at the table.
